Introducing How to Manage Kindly and Lead Effectively in Higher Education

Edited by: Kathy Daniels, Emeritus Professor, Aston University, UK; Layton Pike, Vice-President, International; and Amanda MurrayJohnson, Executive Director, Communications, RMIT University, Australia.

Set against a challenging and increasingly pressured sector, this timely book explores what it means to manage kindly in higher education and advocates that leadership must be grounded in empathy, clarity and effective communication.

The book has been developed as a tribute to Saskia Loer Hansen, a much-loved and respected RMIT University colleague whose belief in the life-changing power of education inspired so many.

It features 24 chapters written by her sector colleagues and friends from across Australia, Asia, Europe and the UK to help ensure that her legacy continues through future generations of students and sector leaders.

The chapters explore what kind leadership truly means, combining contemporary research with practical insights into how kindness can be applied in real-world situations faced by higher education professionals. Case studies highlight interactions within institutions and with external bodies, offering reflective accounts of managerial practice and inclusive leadership.

What Others Are Saying

“This book confirms that kindness is the foundation of effective leadership.”

– Peggy O’Neal, RMIT University, Australia

“A powerful, practice-informed account of leadership in higher education that is rooted in kindness, collegiality and moral clarity. Drawing on diverse contexts from boundary-spanning civic leadership, to managing bereavement with care, to leading authentically through sustained turbulence the contributors demonstrate convincingly that kindness is not a weakness, but a disciplined and courageous form of leadership. This collection shows how attending seriously to people, relationships and values enables trust, resilience and institutional effectiveness. It is a thoughtful and timely book that will resonate with leaders who understand that rigour and humanity are not competing virtues, but mutually reinforcing ones.”

– Anthony C. Hilton, University of West London, UK
